Organization:
Save the Mesas (STM)
Save
the Mesas is the latest in a long line of grass roots citizens' organizations
dedicated to the preservation of North and South Table Mountains in Golden.
STM, incorporated as a 501 c(4) non-profit, was formed in 1998 to
successfully oppose development of a NIKE corporate headquarters on Coors and
Bradley property located on the west side of South Table Mountain.
Previous citizens' groups, such as the Alliance for the Preservation of
South Table Mountain, had successfully opposed plans for quarrying atop the
mesa. The successful opposition to
the NIKE facility was startling, given the support for the development plan by
elected and economic development officials on the city, county and state levels,
and can be attributed to the tenacious efforts of STM members to communicate
their message of Open Space via one-one-contact with the public and through the
media. The success of STM certainly
focused efforts to preserve the Table Mountains but it also catalyzed and rejuvenated
countywide Open Space efforts- witness the successful Save Open
Space bond initiative of the 1998 ballot.
Save
the Mesas continues its advocacy for the preservation of the Table Mountains
through organization of the annual Mesa Music Fest, a celebration of Open Space.
Members of Save the Mesas also formed the Table Mountains Conservation
Fund, incorporated as 501c(3) non-profit. The
latter has been successful in brokering acquisitions of small parcels for
trailhead access on both Table Mountains.
