Jefferson County Nature
Association
The
Jefferson County Nature Association was formed in 1986 by several citizens of
Jefferson County due to the lack of sound ecological information available on
the significance of the county's natural communities and ecosystems available to
decision-makers. JCNA hoped to be a voice for natural ecosystems in the planning
process, primarily at the county level. It was never designed as an advocacy
group; its thrust was in the collection and dissemination of ecological
information, that is, in research (inventory) and education.
JCNA was modeled after the highly successful Boulder County Nature
Association, and was originally a membership organization. Due to lack of time
and interest in administering a regular non-profit group, JCNA soon began to
function as an informal association of technical advisers, and to focus on
providing ecological perspectives to planning organizations, as described
further below. Early in its existence, JCNA identified key areas of interest
and began to focus on them. The
projects it has worked on within the county are numerous.
Their major interests, reflecting the geography of the county and
location of key member residences, have included The North Plains with
particular emphasis on North Table Mountain and the tallgrass prairie owing to
its uniqueness in Colorado. Interests
of the group, however, cover a wide
range as can be seen from the following descriptions of some of the major
projects we have been involved with.
