HOGBACK CONSERVANCY COALITION

The Hogback Conservancy Coalition (HCC) was established in May of 2000.  HCC’s primary focus is to preserve the Hogback Valley, which is located west of the Hogback and east of Lyons Ridge, between Highway 285 to the north and West Belleview Avenue to the south.  This property is currently zoned A-2, and is owned by Colorado Christian University (CCU).

CCU has an application pending before Jefferson County to rezone this property to allow the construction of a 5,000-student campus.  This proposed campus would be comprised of over 1.9 million square feet of administrative buildings, conference center, amphitheater, multiple telecommunication broadcast antennas, retail/commercial outlets, dormitories and apartment buildings, water treatment plants, gymnasium, and other facilities.  It also includes approximately 3,200 parking spaces, as well as 16.8 acres of recreational fields lighted with 90-foot lights.  The County has stated they would require two access points, one on North Turkey Creek Road and one on West Belleview Avenue.

Surrounding neighborhood opposition has been fierce.  It is our hope Jefferson County will continue to follow the South Jefferson County Community Plan (SJCCP), which refers to this parcel of land as Area A East.  The SJCCP considers the Hogback Valley areas as “unique geologic and environmental resources and should be preserved in their natural state to the greatest extent possible”. It very specifically recommends a maximum gross density of one dwelling per five acres.  While the SJCCP does allow for exceptions, it specifically states:  “…but in no case shall the maximum gross density be exceeded.”
